Why Most Loyalty Programs Fail
Most research shows that the majority of loyalty programs get abandoned or fall out of use within the first year. The reason is rarely the idea itself — it is the execution.
Wrong incentive: too small a reward
If the reward is not worth the effort, the customer simply does not bother. The reward needs to feel like real value, not a token gesture.
Technical friction
If signup or use requires too many steps — downloading an app, creating an account, finding a code — many customers give up before even completing their first transaction.
No follow-through from the business
A program that gets set up and then forgotten does not perform on its own. It needs ongoing attention: refreshing offers, watching the data, adjusting when something is not working.
It never gets measured
Without measuring results, businesses do not know whether the program is paying off, so they either abandon it unfairly or keep running something that does not work.
The common thread through all of this: a loyalty program needs proper design from day one and ongoing care — it is not something you set up once and forget.
