Loyalty programs with POS and API: how automatic points and stamps work
A loyalty program can work in two ways at the till: by scanning with the business phone, or through an automatic connection to your till system (POS) via an API. This article explains the difference and when the connection is worth it.
Without a POS connection
The flow is simple: customer QR → scan with the business phone → points or stamp. No hardware is needed, and for most small businesses it's enough. Alternatively, the customer taps their phone on an NFC tag, or staff type the customer's mobile number.
With a POS connection
The flow becomes: sale on the POS → API call → customer identified → points or stamp → reward. The customer just gives their mobile number at the till, as they might for a receipt, and the sale amount passes through automatically — no retyping.
What a POS API is
An API is a documented way for one system to talk to another. The 4Loyalty POS API is a REST API: your till system, or any other software (e.g. an ordering system or ERP), calls the same functions the app does:
- awarding points or stamps after a sale,
- redeeming a reward,
- undoing a transaction,
- transaction history for reconciliation with sales.
The connection is built once, by your POS provider or a developer.
When you need it
- You already have an active POS recording every sale.
- You're busy and every second at the till counts.
- You use points per euro and want the amount to pass through automatically.
- You're a chain and want the same process in every store.
When you don't
- A small store using stamps — QR scanning already takes seconds.
- You have no POS, or your provider can't build the connection.
You can start with scanning and add the connection later, without losing any customer or balance.
What the store gains
- No extra step at the till.
- Fewer mistakes: the amount comes from the POS, not typed in.
- Sales and loyalty data that reconcile.
What happens with redemptions
Redemption can also happen from the POS via the API, or from the 4Loyalty app as always. Your rules (e.g. hours when redemption is blocked) apply either way.
What happens with analytics
Each POS transaction is recorded just like a scan, so analytics and ROI are unified whichever method you use.
For chains
In chains, a POS connection usually goes together with a shared points balance and central management. See Loyalty program for a chain of stores.
