How to choose a loyalty platform in 2026: the complete checklist
On paper, most loyalty platforms look alike: points or stamps, a QR code, some campaigns. The differences show up when you try them in the day-to-day of your store and when you read the pricing closely. This checklist helps you ask the right questions before you commit.
If you're starting from scratch, read the guide to loyalty programs first.
1. Reward model
- Does it support points (per amount) and stamps (per visit)?
- Does it support cashback, if you need it?
- Which reward types: free item, percentage discount?
- Can you write program terms (exclusions, minimum spend) that customers can see?
- Is there points expiry, and are customers notified before points expire?
Which model suits you: Points, stamps or cashback?
2. Members and pricing
- Are there unlimited members or a customer cap?
- Is pricing per store, per member, per transaction?
- Are messages, SMS or campaigns charged separately?
- Is there a setup fee?
- What is not included in the base subscription — are there hidden costs?
- Is there a free trial?
Pricing models are explained in How much does a loyalty program cost?
3. Customer experience
- Does the customer need to download an app? One per store, or one shared app?
- Is there app-less loyalty with a card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet?
- How many steps does sign-up take?
- Can customers see their balance, terms and history?
- Are they notified after each transaction?
4. Identification at the till
- Does it work by scanning a QR code with the business phone, with no hardware?
- Does it support NFC?
- Can you add points by mobile number, for phone orders?
- Is there POS integration and a documented API? See Loyalty with POS and API.
- Is there protection against double scans (minimum time between two transactions)?
5. Campaigns and automation
- Automated campaigns: scheduled, recurring, birthday?
- Customer segmentation (e.g. inactive, regulars)?
- Location-based targeting?
- A win-back mechanism for lost customers?
- Push notifications and/or SMS?
6. Acquiring new customers
- Is there a referral program?
- Does it help with Google reviews?
- Is your store listed in a directory or map where new customers can find it?
7. Analytics and reports
- Can you see visit frequency, active/inactive customers, redemptions?
- Is there a transaction report with filters?
- Can you measure ROI?
8. Staff
- Can staff work without access to settings and analytics?
- Is it recorded which staff member made each transaction?
- Can a mistaken transaction be undone?
9. GDPR and data
- Is customer consent recorded, per category?
- Can customers export their data themselves?
- Can they request data deletion without emailing you?
- Is there a data processing agreement (DPA)?
Why this is your responsibility: GDPR and loyalty programs.
10. Multiple stores and chains
- Does it support multiple stores with a shared points balance (e.g. a Loyalty Pool)?
- Is there central management with per-store roles?
- Can the chain have its own app (white-label)?
More: Loyalty program for a chain of stores.
11. Switching platforms
- Can you migrate your customers and their balances from your current platform?
- If you leave, can you take your data with you?
In detail: How to switch loyalty platforms without losing customers.
12. Support
- Who answers when something goes wrong — a person, or just a form?
- In which language?
- How quickly?
The practical test
Ask for a free trial and do three things in the first week: sign up a real customer, process a transaction at peak time, and request a data export from the customer's side. You'll learn more than from any demo.
4Loyalty has a 14-day free trial. See the features and the comparison with other loyalty solutions.
