How much does a loyalty program cost for a business?

The cost of a loyalty program has two parts: what you pay the platform, and what the rewards themselves cost you. This article explains both, and lists 4Loyalty's prices in detail at the end.

Platform pricing models

ModelHow it's chargedWhat to watch for
Per storeA fixed monthly amount for each storePredictable, independent of the number of customers
Per member / customerBased on registered customersCost rises as the program succeeds
Per transactionAn amount or percentage per scan/purchaseHard to predict in busy months
Per message / SMSCharged per sendHow often you'll send, and to how many

Many platforms combine more than one model.

Other costs to check

  • Setup: is there a one-off setup fee?
  • Hardware: do you need a tablet, a card reader or a special device?
  • POS integration: is the till connection charged? Does the developer's work cost extra?
  • SMS: are verification or marketing SMS charged?
  • Campaigns: is sending messages charged?
  • White-label: what does your own app and its yearly maintenance cost?
  • Add-ons: what do you need that isn't in the base subscription?

The cost of rewards

The second part is the cost of the rewards. If "6 coffees = 1 free", the reward costs one coffee's cost of goods every six visits — not its menu price. Work out the real cost of what you give away and compare it with the extra revenue from customers visiting more often. The method is in How to measure loyalty program ROI, and you can make an estimate with the ROI calculator.
