Loyalty card in Apple or Google Wallet: loyalty without installing an app

Have you ever asked a passing customer to download an app just to keep a stamp card? Many say no — not because they don't want the reward, but because they don't want yet another app on their phone. That's why every business's first question is: does the customer need to download an app?

The short answer: not necessarily

A modern loyalty program can work in three ways:

  • A card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet — nothing to install.
  • A shared app for many stores (with 4Loyalty, the free 4Rewards app).
  • Your own branded app, for chains (white-label).

How the Wallet card works

  1. The customer scans a QR code in store or opens a link.
  2. They enter their mobile number and confirm it with an SMS code.
  3. The card is added to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, like a boarding pass.

At the till, staff scan the card's code as usual.

It updates itself

Every time the customer earns a point or stamp, the Wallet card updates automatically. They see their balance from the lock screen, with your store's logo and colours (see customise the card to your brand).

When no app is needed

  • Passing customers, tourists, first visits.
  • When you want the least possible sign-up friction.

When the app is worth it

  • When you want to send campaigns with push notifications.
  • When you want referrals, scratch cards and discovery by new customers.

The two aren't exclusive: a customer who starts with the Wallet card can install the app later with the same mobile number, without losing anything.

With 4Loyalty

The Apple and Google Wallet card is enabled on request; talk to us if you want it in your store. SMS verification of each new customer has a small fee (see how much it costs). For the basics, see the guide to loyalty programs.
